Baruipur sub-division is a subdivision of the South 24 Parganas district in the state of West Bengal, India. It consists of three municipalities (Baruipur, Rajpur Sonarpur and Jaynagar Mazilpur) and seven community development blocks: Baruipur, Bhangar–I, Bhangar–II, Jaynagar–I, Jaynagar–II, Kultali and Sonarpur. The seven blocks contain two census towns and 80 Gram Panchayats. The subdivision has its headquarters at Baruipur.
Rural area under Baruipur block consists of 19 Gram Panchayats: Begumpur, Dhapdhapi–II, Mallickpur, Shankarpur–II, Belegachhi, Hardhah, Nabagram, Shikharbali–I, Brindakhali, Hariharpur, Ramnagar–I, Shikharbali–II, Champahati, Kalyanpur, Ramnagar–II, Dhapdhapi–I, South Garia, Madarhat and Shankarpur–I. There is no urban area under this block. Baruipur police station serves this block. Headquarters of this block is in Piyali Town.
Rural area under Bhangar–I block consists of 3 Gram Panchayats: Pranganj, Jagulgachhi and Narayanpur . Urban area under this block consists of one census town: Bhangar Raghunathpur. Bhangar and KLC police station serves this block. Headquarters of this block is in Gobindapur.
Rural area under Bhangar–II block consists of 10 gram panchayats: Bamanhata, Bhagawanpur, Chaltaberia, Shanpukur, Benttata–I, Bhogali–I, Polerhat–I, Benttata–II, Bhogali–II, Polerhat–II. There is no urban area under this block. Kashipur police station serves this block. Headquarters of this block is in Bhangar.
Rural area under Jaynagar–I block consists of 12 gram panchayats: Baharu Kshetra, Dhosa Chandaneswar, Khakurdaha, Uttar Durgapur, Bamangachhi, Narayanitala, Chaltaberia, Harinarayanpur, Rajapur Korabeg, Dakshin Barasat, Jangalia and Sripur. Urban area under this block consists of one census town: Uttar Durgapur. Jaynagar police stations serve this block. Headquarters of this block is in Baru. Narayanitala Jaynagar
Rural area under Jaynagar–II block consists of 10 gram panchayats: Baishata, Futigoda, Mayahauri, Sahajadapur, Beledurganagar, Gardoani, Mayda, Chuprijhara, Manirtat and Nalgora. There is no urban area under this block. Jaynagar and Kultali police stations serve this block. Headquarters of this block is in Ramkrishna Ashram. mollar chak .
Rural area under Kultali block consists of 9 gram panchayats: Deulbari Debipur, Jalaberia–I, Maipith Baikunthapur, Gopalganj, Jalaberia–II, Gurguria Bhubaneswari, Kundakhali Godabar, Meriganj–I and Meriganj–II. There is no urban area under this block. Kultali, Maipith Coastal police station serves this block. Headquarters of this block is in Jamtalahat.
Rural area under Sonarpur block consists of 11 gram panchayats: Banhooghly–I, Kalikapur–II, Kheyadaha–II, Pratapnagar, Banhooghly–II, Kamrabad, Langalberia, Sonarpur–II, Kalikapur–I, Kheyadaha–I and Poleghat. There is no urban area under this block. Sonarpur police station serves this block. Headquarters of this block is in Rajpur.
As per order of the Delimitation Commission in respect of the delimitation of constituencies in West Bengal, the area under Kultali block along with four gram panchayats under the Jaynagar–II block: Baishata, Chuprijhara, Manirtat and Nalgora, will form the 129 Kultali Assembly Constituency of West Bengal. The other six gram panchayats under the Jaynagar–II block, the Jaynagar Mazilpur municipality and six gram panchayats under the Jaynagar–I block: Baharu Kshetra, Dakshin Barasat, Harinarayanpur, Rajapur Korabeg, Sripur and Uttar Durgapur, will together form the 136 Jaynagar Assembly Constituency. The other six gram panchayats under the Jaynagar–I block and nine gram panchayats under the Baruipur block: Begumpur, Belegachhi, Brindakhali, Champahati, Hardhah, Nabagram, Ramnagar–I, Ramnagar–II and South Garia, will together form the 137 Baruipur Purba Assembly Constituency. The other ten gram panchayats under the Baruipur block along with the Baruipur municipality will form the 140 Baruipur Paschim Assembly Constituency. Wards 8–24 of the Rajpur Sonarpur municipality and six gram panchayats under Sonarpur block: Kalikapur–I, Kalikapur–II, Langalberia, Poleghat, Pratapnagar and Sonarpur–II, will together form the 147 Sonarpur Dakshin Assembly Constituency. The other six gram panchayats under Sonarpur block, along with wards 1–7 and 25–33 of Rajpur Sonarpur municipality will form the 151 Sonarpur Uttar Assembly Constituency. The Bhangar–II block and three gram panchayats under the Bhangar–I block: Jagulgachhi, Narayanpur and Pranganj, will together define the extent of the 148 Bhangar Assembly Constituency. The other six gram panchayats under the Bhangar–I block will be part of the Canning Purba assembly constituency. The constituencies of Kultali, Jaynagar and Baruipur Purba will be reserved for Scheduled castes (SC) candidates. The constituencies of Kultali, Canning Purba and Jaynagar will be assembly segments of the Jaynagar (Lok Sabha constituency), which will be reserved for SC candidates. The constituencies of Baruipur Purba, Baruipur Paschim, Sonarpur Uttar, Sonarpur Dakshin and Bhangar will be assembly segments of the Jadavpur (Lok Sabha constituency).
Baruipur is located at 22.35°N 88.44°E. It has an average elevation of 9 meters (29 feet).
As per 2011 Census of India Baruipur had a total population of 21,87,189(Projected) .
Transport
Baruipur is well connected with Roadways and Railways. Buses like CTC,CSTC, Private Buses, STA Buses are available all the time in Baruipur. Auto-rickshaw also is an important life-line of connectivity. Besides this, Baruipur plays as an important junction in the railway sector. The nearest metro station is Kavi Nazrul is almost 14 km from Baruipur.
Baruipur had a flourishing surgical tools industry, which is now on revival path. In Baruipur there exists some web development houses. One of them is Web Designers House. One of the Economical activity of this locality is cultivation of various types of fresh fruit . Baruipur has proud for Guava cultivation other fruit are Lichi, Mango, Achras Japota, Aish fruit, Locked fruit, Gulap jamoon etc. The Joynagar is better known for the Nalen Gur (Jaggery made from Date Palm tree extract) and Moa (Puff rice & jaggery ball) is a winter season delicacy of all Bengalis.
The gajan utsab of Baruipur is famous. According to local legend, there was once a severely contested lathi fight between the lathials of the Sabarna Choudhurys of Barisa and the Roy Choudhurys of Baruipur concerning the boundary dispute of their respective Zamindaris. The Sardar of the lathials of the Sabarna Roy Choudhury was Bhriguram. The lathials of Baruipur managed to cut off his head with a sword and won the fight. However, Bhriguram was so much respected in the area that a lock of his hair was preserved. Bhriguram is still publicly honoured by the exposition of lock during the gajan mela at Baruipur.[6]
